Fall Fellowship 26-28 October 2007
Fall Fellowship 2007 The Fall Fellowship this year, hosted by the Pamunkey Chapter at Bayport Scout Reservation, was as usual a fun event for all who attended. The weather was nice (barring the rains Friday night) and the food was good – particularly the delicious steak and potatoes everybody feasted on Saturday night. All in all, a good weekend. During most of Saturday morning, a variety of training sessions put on by various Advisers and Scouts alike took place, ranging from topics as far and wide as the OA Troop representative to the website. Those who attended not only gained insight to things they may need in the future, but it was also a requirement to get the Participation Award. Unfortunately, due to the heavy rains Friday, most of the competitions planned were unable to be done; instead the training sessions took up the whole of the morning. The Pamunkey chapter chief, however, managed to hook a deal with the local staff and managed to get the climbing tower over on the High Adventure side of camp open to the attendees following lunch. As per tradition, the annual Iron Duck competition was held on the Reservation. This year, the relay race consisted of a short sprint from the Birdsong shelter to the Nighthawk shelter, where competitors answered a series of OA trivia. After that, the racers raced to the Scoutcraft shelter to cut logs into spars. Next was a long sprint back to the Birdsong shelter for a watermelon eating contest, then a race to Handicraft where racers sewed Recruiter patches onto small swatches of cloth. After sewing the patch on racers sprinted to the Range where they threw hatchets. The final leg of the race had the teams build an A-frame for a team member to sit in with the others dragging the one in the frame over the finish line in front of the Birdsong shelter. This year, the winning chapter was none other than the host, Pamunkey Chapter. Following the Iron Duck, 23 brothers sealed their membership in the Order. Following a great Brotherhood ceremony by the Ceremonies team, the Saturday feast was exquisite. Steak, potatoes, rolls and even ice cream adorned the plates of those attending. Several awards were given out including a personal thank you from Jeremy Hooten to Ben Breen for coordinating almost the entire event. The Chief also thanked those in his chapter who helped to put the Fellowship together. In addition to all these Scouts getting awards and thanks, George Burdine from the Heritage District area was also awarded his Woodbadge beads, necker and woggle. Congratulations to everybody! All in all, it was a good Fellowship, and many went home Sunday morning feeling good and happy about their time with their brothers. Daniel Bonnizzio Winter Ordeal 24-26 February 2006 The 2006 Winter Ordeal was held at Camp Pipsico in Surry County and as is becoming normal for the Winter Ordeal…a cold time was had by all. The temperature on Friday night was a blustery minus 427,173 degrees. Well, maybe not that cold but it was a might nippy. It wasn't as cold as last year though. Last year it was so cold the camp fires froze. Not that I would enhance or exaggerate a campfire story but it's always colder "back in the day". Saturday was beautiful weather for cheerful service however. I believe it reached 45 degrees for about 17 seconds. Saturday night was perfect for sleeping, assuming your tent was staked down with 18 inch spikes, and I didn't hear a lot of night owls out and about as the temperature started to drop and the wind began to howl. It even woke me up…and that's hard to do. Sunday morning….now there was one for the books. Good thing we had a building. I think I'll sew my event patch on with white thread to remind me of the frost on my nose. Next year we should be in our own camp and I can't wait to see if the wind off the Rappahannock is warmer than the wind off the James. Being in our own camp again will be worth at least 20 degrees of warmth I reckon. In spite of the slight nip in the air everyone I talked to had a blast at this Ordeal. One of the best I've attended. Some numbers….. There were about 250 brothers in attendance including 73 new Ordeal candidates. 14 Ordeal Honor Brothers converted to Brotherhood Honor members. The Lodge accomplished about 1750 hours of cheerful service and helped out our Brothers in the Tidewater Council. Some thanks…..to Mr. Lewis, Mr. Fry and Mr. Mullins for the patch auction….to whoever thought to provide a movie, thanks….to all the committees, thanks…. Once again the kitchen crew outdid themselves and we didn't lack for lots of great food. Those folks really work hard. The Elangomats….thanks for being a "friend" again and again. The ceremonies and dance team performances were inspiring as always. Attending the ceremonies always give me a chance to "ponder that which is our purpose" and recharge my OA batteries. I hope they inspire you as well. Great job guys.
