Mission Statement: The Purpose of this workshop is to provide youths, eleven years of age and older, skills training and information relative to hunting. The Workshop will be concluded in a controlled environment with the emphasis of the workshop on the ethics of hunting and will be conducted with the safety of the participants being the primary objective of the workshop.

Who: Venturing Members or Eligible youth (Must be 11 by date of event in order to participate).

When: Saturday, August 24th, 2013: This event will begin at 7am and conclude 5pm saturday evening

Course Descriptions:

• Introduction to Hunting

Covers basics of hunting deer, squirrel and turkeys. Covers basic species biology, hunting methods, field dressing and care of game. Discussion of game laws and safety issues.

• Getting Started in Hunting

Discussion of what we need to consider when we first start hunting; ethical issues, safety issues, weather considerations, where to hunt, what we may need to carry, how we conduct ourselves, what clothing we may need, etc. Includes an overview of resources the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has available to hunters and showing “The Hunter’s Path” DVD.

• Treestand Safety

Covers use of full body harnesses, life lines and use of basic and self-climbing stands.

• Shotgun Shooting at Clay Pigeons

Covers basic shotgun shooting, determining dominant eye and shotgun “fit” as well as fundamentals of shooting at a moving target. Each Student will have the opportunity to shoot at moving targets.

• Shotgun Shooting at Static Targets

Reviews Basic Shotgun Shooting, determining dominant eye and shotgun “fit” and highlights the differences of using a shotgun to shoot at essentially “static” targets including game. Emphasizes the need to focus on the learned fundamentals of sight alignment, sight picture, trigger squeeze and follow through when hunting with buckshot or rifled slugs. Each student will shoot buckshot and rifle slugs at deer sized targets and #4 fine shot at turkey and squirrel targets.

Event registration includes lunch and dinner, shotgun/rifle ammunition and instruction materials. This event promises to be fun and action-packed and will include live fire, safety training, tracking, field dressing game and many other interesting topics.
